List of Dances
We teach all the popular social dances in our classes. Both the
Ballroom & Latin and the
American Social & Latin classes
cover the same dances. We teach material and technique that is appropriate for
social dancing, rather than competitions
or International Style. For example, we teach the man "to think on his feet" by changing the beginnings and endings to
"root patterns" so he is not predictable and to mix patterns in different ways. This makes it more fun and more versatile in
terms of music styles and physical space. We teach appropriate styling for men and women for each dance. We teach you
to navigate within a crowded dance floor and to adapt your patterns to fit the
music. For example, some songs are better for slow-dancing, rather than a
foxtrot.
"Smooth and Swing"
* Swing
both triple- and single-time
* Slow-dance
* Foxtrot
Lounge Foxtrot for a small dance floor
Tango
Waltz
Swing--New instructional video for level 1
Slow-dance Many contemporary songs are not a definite
foxtrot or waltz. Tina has designed a syllabus of patterns
that give you flexibility and nice moves that are very
"leadable." Many of the songs chosen for the wedding
dance fall into this category.
Foxtrot--New instructional video for level 2
"Lounge Foxtrot" Often times you find yourself on a
small dance floor and you just can't use the "traveling"
moves for lack of space. Tina has designed a syllabus to
give you plenty of movement, but in a small area.
Again, it's very "leadable."
Salsa and Latin
Salsa
Mambo "on 2"
Cha Cha Cha
Rumba
Merenge
Bossa Nova
Samba
Classes consist of various dances, but it is recommended that you take the level 1 class more than once because there is always new material each time. There is so much to cover that not all the dances are included in a given 8-week course. If taking private lessons, you will begin with a foundation and then progress to the dances that suit your social needs.
We can set up a workshop for your organization for either youth or adults. These can be a one-time
presentation or a series of classes.
Cha-cha-cha - from '50's classic patterns to contemporary fusion
Increase your awareness of placement, line, execution, direction, and artistic expression. Change your style and patterns to fit retro Latin, Pop, or Afro-Cuban, through both partner work and freestyle "shines." Can be taught either "on1" or "on2."
Cha-cha-cha technique and footwork "on 2"
Begin with technique exercises to create your own personal expression. Explore various arm and body movements for different patterns, including syncopations. You'll learn a variety of creative shines, while learning how to "think" as you dance, so you come out of any shine "on time" with your partner. From "funky" boogaloo, to jazzy, to Afro-Cuban style, you'll have lots of options to play with. It's food for your brain and body.
Back-spot-turns & swivels in mambo, Bolero, & cha-cha-cha
Explore the structure and technique of these moves in all 3 dances. The back-spot-turn is important for the man to execute smooth and continuing turns, while the swivels are done in a circular or straight line and accentuate the woman's footwork. These are practical moves that add variety and style. For more advanced dancers.
Hot Salsa & Mambo
"Move your feet to the Latin beat!" With roots in Cuba, it's a dance that is hot around the world.
Tina will put you through the paces in this very contemporary and challenging dance. Exercise your body and your brain as you learn the structure of the dance, how to break "on 1" or "on 2", footwork for freestyle and turning, and partnering techniques. The men will learn "principles" of leading so they can create combinations and not be "predictable"; while the women will learn techniques for turning and dancing with flair. Plus you'll get freestyle footwork, "shines."
Latin Elegance -- Bolero or Rumba (Bolero is a slow rumba rhythm.)
Bring back the romance of the Golden Age of Latin dance. You'll learn technique and beautiful moves that you can do at any ballroom dance or social function. The men will learn practical tips on leading and the women will learn to follow, while dancing with flair and elegance. You'll swivel, turn, do "ochos" and add elements of tango, as well. The bolero and rumba are the foundation for Latin dances such as the cha-cha-cha and salsa. These are very popular and versatile dances that can be slow and elegant or faster, with an Afro-Cuban beat. They have many similarities.
Luis Miguel, Gloria Estefan, and Dean Martin are examples of artists who sing rumba rhythms.
Swing & Foxtrot--the big band beat
Swing dance to blues, jazz, rock, and big band music. Learn this versatile all-American dance in both single-time and triple-time swing. Single-time swing is the original jazz-style from the '40's that's more elegant and not "jumpy. The foxtrot has been popular since 1913 and is the foundation for ballroom dance. Check out Tina's instructional videos, Swing, level 1 and Foxtrot--Line-of-Dance patterns, level 2.
"Lounge Foxtrot"-- designed by Tina for the "small dance floor"
Haven't you been to a social function, and there was a small floor put into the banquet room? You can't do ballroom-style foxtrot and try to "run around" all over people.
So learn a foxtrot style that's perfect for a small dance floor, which Tina calls "lounge foxtrot." It's a cool way to sway to Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, and other crooners. You'll incorporate twinkles, unwinds, sways, turns, and lots of patterns that keep you moving in a small area.
"Contemporary Slow Dancing"--designed by Tina for all that romantic slow music
that just isn't a foxtrot or waltz
It's a two-count dance that can either be danced in a small area or can travel. It's a popular dance for many of the songs that wedding couples choose. Often times you'll go to a function and the DJ will play some beautiful old and new "slow songs," for which this dance is perfect--instead of just swaying back and forth.
Choreography Class for a group showcase--any dance.
From the Charleston, to the Can-Can, to Afro-Cuban, and Ballroom--Tina will create and coach a group or couple dance number. If a Cotillion or Presentation Ball is the function, then Tina can choreograph the cotillion waltz and other formations.
These can be one-day workshops or a series of classes. We have appropriate programs for
